Has your home or business been recently burglarized? There were 1.9 million burglaries that took place within the United States in 2013 alone, according to the FBI. Most of these, or 74%, were residential rather than business burglaries. Overall, however, these burglaries amounted to $4.5 billion in property damage and loss.
On an annual basis, approximately two million residential burglaries are reported to law enforcement. Unfortunately, someone’s home is burglarized every 13 seconds. While renters are 85% more likely to have someone break into their house or apartment, homeowners also experience a significant number of break-ins and burglaries.
Most residential burglaries take place during the day, which is the case with roughly 63% of all reported home invasions. In approximately 34% of these cases, it was found that the burglars actually entered the home through the front door. One of the reasons for this may be that the doors’ deadbolts weren’t installed properly. A recent survey showed that this was the case with 10% of the homes where robberies occurred.
In some cases, however, someone may have forgotten to lock the door, which does occur from time-to-time. This is why it’s always a good practice to check and double-check all doors and windows prior to leaving the house.
While many burglars may be able to enter a residence because the deadbolts aren’t secure or because doors are broken or left unlocked, others force their way into a home. In 2013, this was the case with 59% of all burglaries.
In order to prevent home and business invasions and burglaries, there are several steps that can be taken. First of all, it’s important to have locksmiths check all of the deadbolts and other types of locks. If your home has recently suffered a forced entry, chances are that your doors and/or windows have been damaged. In this case, it’s important to have this situation assessed in order to determine if you need these replaced. It’s also a good idea to make sure that doors and windows are well-seated and not easy to break.
If your business has recently been broken into, you may want to have a commercial replacement door. When this is the case, it’s important to ensure that your new door has high-quality commercial door locks.
Rather than wait until after a break-in, it’s important to have locksmiths check your existing doors, locks, and other security measures. In this way, chances are that you may be able to prevent someone from breaking into your home or business. When locksmiths visit your home or business, be sure to ask them about other important preventative measures.
